Cargo Airports Do Brisk Business

Cargo airports were bustling in 2017, according to the Airport Council International's finalized list of the world's top 20 busiest cargo airports in 2017 (see chart). Total cargo volumes handled (loaded and unloaded freight and mail) increased by 7.8 percent from the previous year, to 50.6 million metric tons.
Airports in the Asia-Pacific region continued to handle the highest volumes of cargo, while Africa's airports saw the highest rate of growth from the previous year:
  • Asia-Pacific: 47 million metric tons (increased 3 percent)
  • North America: 33 million metric tons (increased 1 percent)
  • Europe: 22 million metric tons (increased 6 percent)
  • Middle East: 3 million metric tons (increased 5.9 percent)
  • Latin America-Caribbean: 4 million metric tons (increased 4.7 percent)
  • Africa: 2 million metric tons (increased 9.2 percent)

Saudia's cargo unit adds two planes to fleet

Two new B747-400 freighters increases fleet to 15; will be used in cargo charter market The cargo unit of Saudi Arabian Airlines is expanding its dedicated fleet with the arrival of two B747-400 freighters. Saudia Cargo's latest additions will form part of its 15-strong fleet, the carrier said in a statement. Of these aircraft, 12 will be used for Saudia's scheduled services to 27 freighter destinations worldwide, while its charter business will benefit from three dedicated B747 freighters. Steven Peter Scholten, vice-president Commercial at Saudia Cargo, said: "A 15-strong fleet with 12 aircraft being utilised for scheduled services, while the 3 dedicated charter aircraft will offer our clients more capacity in the ad-hoc charter market. "The combination of our scheduled and charter activities enables us to offer our clients smart, cost-effective solutions via our three hubs in Saudi Arabia," he added.
